Custom Orthotics

What are custom orthotics?

Understanding the therapy

Custom orthotics are specially designed inserts or supportive devices that fit inside footwear and are made to address an individual's specific foot structure, movement patterns, and functional requirements.

  • Foot and heel discomfort
  • Flat feet or high arches
  • Pressure-related foot problems
  • Gait and movement concerns
  • Sports-related foot issues
  • Joint and lower-limb support
  • Certain alignment concerns
  • Footwear-related discomfort

The goal is to provide the right level of support for your individual needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all solution.

Benefits of individual therapy

Every foot and movement pattern is different. A personalized orthotic assessment helps determine whether an orthosis is appropriate and what type of support may best suit your needs. A custom device is not automatically better than an off-the-shelf option; the choice depends on the individual's requirements.

Personalized Support

Designed around your individual foot shape, movement, and functional requirements.

Pressure Management

Orthotic devices can help redistribute pressure and reduce stress on specific areas of the foot.

Improved Comfort

Appropriate support may help reduce discomfort during standing, walking, exercise, or everyday activities.

Support Better Movement

Orthoses can be used to support alignment, mobility, and function as part of a broader rehabilitation plan.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Questions we often asked

  • What happens during a custom orthotics assessment?

We assess your gait, foot posture, joint alignment, and the wear pattern on your current shoes to understand how you actually load your feet. We then take a 3D scan or foam cast of each foot, and your prescription orthotics are manufactured from those moulds. Fitting usually takes place around two weeks later.

  • Are custom orthotics better than regular insoles?

They do a different job. Off-the-shelf insoles add generic cushioning in a handful of stock shapes. Custom orthotics are built from a cast of your own feet to a prescription written for your condition, so they control alignment and redistribute load in the specific way your assessment calls for.

  • How long does it take to get used to custom orthotics?

Plan on a break-in period. Start with one to two hours a day and build up gradually over the first week or two, and expect some new sensations as your feet adapt. Most people are wearing them full time and comfortably within two to four weeks. If discomfort persists, bring them back and we will adjust them.

  • Can I wear custom orthotics in my existing shoes?

In most cases, yes. Any shoe with a removable insole and a firm heel counter, such as a lace-up walking or running shoe, will take them. Bring the shoes you wear most to your fitting so we can check, and let us know if you need a separate pair made for dress shoes, cleats, or ski boots.

  • How long do custom orthotics last?

For an adult wearing them daily, two to three years is typical before the shell loses its corrective properties, and the top covers can be replaced sooner if they wear through. Children and teenagers need replacements more often as their feet grow. We check the fit at your follow-up visits.
